Teaching children about the First Americans in an accurate historical context while emphasizing their continuing presence and influence within the United States is important for developing a national and individual respect for the diverse Native Americans. Their influence is necessary to understand the history of this country.

Educational Objectives:
This lesson provides opportunities for students to:

• Generate multiple designs with the use of color and release techniques
• Use multiple instructions to produce a hands-on project
• Understanding and applying media, techniques and processes
• Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others
• Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines
• How American Indians are represented in today’s society with their customs, traditions, and way of life
• Understand that Native Americans are made up of diverse people and cultures
• Identify the names of specific Native North American tribes
• Learn the geographic regions of the United States that correspond to Native American cultural bands
