DIY Dyed Pompom Rug

Add some fun to your floor spaces with a pompom rug that pops with color! Create your own custom rug to match your space with Tulip® ColorLab™ cotton yarns and dye kits.

Note: This project used 20 skeins of chunky weight cotton yarn and two dye kits.

  1. Cut a 36-inch circle from rug canvas. Set aside.
  2. Wearing disposable gloves from kit, add water to all dye bottles, filling to line.  Replace caps tightly and shake until dye is dissolved. Pour each color into bottoms of plastic pitchers. Tip: You may need enough dye from two kits depending on how large your rug is going to be.
  3. Lay aside 4 skeins of yarn to remain un-dyed.
  4. Rinse and wring out 16 skeins of yarn, keeping skeins bound. Place four skeins of yarn into each pitcher of dye. Place lids on pitchers and let set 4 to 6 hours for intense color.
  5. Remove yarn from pitchers and rinse thoroughly with water until excess dye is removed and water runs clear. Hang to dry completely before next steps.
  6. Use the Pompom Maker to make 3-inch, 4-inch and 5-inch pompoms with dyed yarn and with the un-dyed yarn. Leave 4-inch ties on pompoms to tie to rug canvas.
  7. Tie pompoms randomly to rug canvas, covering completely.
