Fishy Fun Animal Plate

Make meal time full of fun with this adorable animal plate from Duncan®! Bright colors and fishy fins come to life with creativity and Concepts Underglazes.

  1. Wipe plate with damp sponge to remove bisque dust.
  2. Using circle template, draw 1¼” circle on contact paper. Cut out.
  3. Remove sticky back and position cut out on plate for fish eye and adhere. Refer to photo for exact placement.
  4. Pour puddles of Neon Yellow, Bright Salsa, Dark Salsa and Neon Blue on palette.
  5. Moving from left to right, sponge circular part of plate with Neon Yellow then Bright Salsa, Dark Salsa and lastly Neon Blue on the two protruding round shapes on plate. Sponge and blend colors that are next to each other. Let dry. Repeat process for two more coats, letting color dry between coats. Let dry. Remove circle stencil.
  6. Transfer pattern onto plate with clay carbon paper.
  7. Dilute Dark Salsa and paint fish scales. While paint is wet use wet paintbrush to “float” or blend color of lines into background. Add lining around eye and mouth and floating or blending color into background. Let dry.
  8. Brush two good coats of Neon Blue around pupil in eyes.
  9. Brush Sapphire Shimmers around outer part of blue eyes and two coats on edges of fish tail blending into the Neon Blue. Let dry.
  10. Use Liner brush to paint fine line in fish’s mouth, lines in fins and tail. Paint pupil  with Black, leaving a white highlight. Line around pupil and outer eye. Let dry.
  11. Place plate on kiln shelf and fire to cone 06.
  12. Brush two coats Pure Brilliance to back of plate. Let dry.
  13. Brush two coats in whites of fish’s eye and one light coat over remainder of fish.  Let dry.
  14. Stilt plate on shelf and fire to cone 06.
